We flew Virgin Atlantic from London Heathrow to Washington DC on 25th September 2006. The flight was delayed, of course, but the food was good and dispite the cramped conditions we managed to watch the inflight movie and play backgammon on your personal seat back screen. We landed very smoothly at 15.45 pm local time to a perfectly clear blue sky and 25 dec centigrade. The queue for immigration was long but it moved quickly and we were soon talking to a very polite immigration officer. We were not able to obtain a 12 month visa as we had hoped, "No one gets a years visa, but you can extend it no problem" he told us, he even found out the web address for us. So we have 6 months leave to stay in the USA. As we travelled away from the terminal in the rental car bus we saw a huge Stars and Stripes flag fluttering in the wind, at last it actually felt like our adventure had begun.
The queue for the hire car desk was not as long as immigration but it took twice as long to get to the front. Once we had our car the satnav came into its own as it guided us out of the airport and onto US606 out of town. We made it as far as Leesburg that night before the jet lag kicked in, we dragged all our bags into the room for what seemed like the 10th time today before supper and a nice soft bed.
